Lucy Brown received her
Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of
California, Riverside in 1984, and completed her Master of
Science Degree in Biology from California State Polytechnic
University, Pomona in 1986. Her Master’s thesis focused on
development of an ELISA to determine the humoral immune response
for a mouse model of Chlamydial infections. She has been an
employee of the Beckman Research Institute/City of Hope Medical
Center since 1986, starting out as a Research Associate and is
currently the Manager of the Analytical Cytometry Core, a shared
resource for the cancer center. She joined the core lab in 1991
at which time was introduced to flow cytometry with a BD FACSIV.
She was the sole operator for this core facility until 2000.
The facility currently contains 2 cell sorters—a three laser
MoFlo and a five laser XDP, and 4 analytical instruments, a 9
color CyAn, 10 color Gallios, 4 color FACS calibur, and a 4
color Accuri-C6. She manages a staff of 4 full time operators,
manages the day to day operations of this core facility,
instrument trouble shooting and basic maintenance. She trains
BRI/COH personnel to operate the analytical instruments, teaches
basic flow and software operation, and assists investigators
with experimental design. Lucy can be reached at
